Background

Mostly Women and children suffer inequality in Humanitarian settings, which ranges from neglect, Child labour, Early marriage, Gender Based Violence, and out-of-school children. Similarly, children living in IDPs camps and host communities in the  Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Borno are facing same challenges. These situations have been further exacerbated by the insurgency faced over the years, it has deepen and there is serious humanitarian risks faced by these children. The result of the continuous communal clashes and reprisal attacks, have exposed the vulnerability of children living in the IDPs locations.

Why the Project?

 This project is therefore meant to provide timely and life-saving protection services for at least 5000 children through raising awareness and building the capacity of at least 50 service providers, including duty bearers, community members and humanitarian actors, to reduce protection risks, identify and support the most vulnerable ones. This project will also consider persons living with disabilities living in the IDP locations (Camps, host communities and returnee communities) in northeastern Nigeria. These 5,000 most vulnerable and at-risk children will be supported with protection services, mental health and psycho-social support services through age and gender-tailored minimum packages, and positive parenting for caregivers and specialized mental health services, in line with the Child Protection Minimum Standards.

 Objectives

  • Provide timely and life-saving protection services to at least 5,000 children, through awareness and provision of quality mental health and psychosocial support services and information on childcare and protection.
  • Children (including children with disabilities) have access to comprehensive case management services, this will be done in collaboration with the health sector and institutions.
  • Parents and Caregivers engaged and sensitized to return out-of-school children back-to-school. This will be done in collaboration with the education sector and institutions.
  • Strengthen the capacity of at least 40 community-based structures and service providers’ capacities to identify the most vulnerable children and give them appropriate support to mitigate the harm on the children.
  • Engage and Strengthen the capacity of local authorities to identify, promote and protect the rights of children affected by the conflict and humanitarian crises. This will also be a platform for sustainability of the project.
  • Reduce the risk of violence and abuse, and to counter negative coping mechanisms experienced by the vulnerable children, through awareness raising to improve access to civil documentation and basic services such as education, health and GBV awareness.

Target Population and Location

Approximately 5000 Directly Affected persons

2240 Boys, 2760 Girls respectively.

These include internally displaced persons, host communities, returnees and person with disabilities

An estimated 1,000 persons are to indirectly benefit from the Mental Health & Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS) drugs and services that will be provided in the Health Centers across the 3 target project LGAs Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Jere and Konduga, 40 Community based workers including community stakeholders, Humanitarian workers to be trained on the prevention and end violence against children.

Activities

  • Trace and identify neglected and vulnerable children with no access to basic life services like Education and Nutrition, then link them to the appropriate authorities for Food and Shelter.
  • Advocacy and Sensitisation meetings to community leaders and local authorities on the prevention of violence and abuse against children
  • Training of 60 community members.to build their capacities on how to prevent and respond to gender based violence, including harmful practices against children rights
  • Provide social and recreational facilities and services to neglected and vulnerable children
  • Providing Blanket and Mosquito nets for 300 vulnerable neglected and vulnerable children including adolescents with disabilities, and caregivers’
  • Sensitization meetings with key affected population community stakeholders and local authorities to support children’s rights and to establish a mechanism for sustainability of the project
  • Production of 3 Billboards, 9 Banners, 4,000 IEC Materials and 300 sets of Souvenirs carrying messages to prevent the violation and abuse of children in the society.
  • Training of 15 MHPSS workers and 30 Social workers across the project locations
  • Documentation of rights violation against UAC and separated children to seek legal aid.
